My Review of The Elephant Man

I first saw the Elephant Man with my dad when I was about 9, 10 years old. I remember watching some parts of the film, but some parts we watched in class seemed new to me. It's obvious I didn't really pay much attention when I was 9.  I never really understood the purpose of the movie or why John Merrick had to die at the end, but now that I look back I get it. The symbolism included in the movie really made me think back and reflect on the person John Merrick really was. I like how the movie makes one think about whether they are good people or bad people, do we really do things out of the kindness of our hearts or are we being selfish? I often find myself thinking about the answers to these questions. The Elephant Man has become one of my favorite movies because not only is the film good, but it was based on a true story. John (Joseph) Merrick really did exist and since this movie was based on such an amazing human being, it is a much watch!

  1. Interesting! I can’t imagine what this movie would look like to a person so young. I’m glad you had a chance to revisit it and learn from it!
